Astley Cooper School

The Astley Cooper School project was part of the Government’s Priority School Building Programme. The scheme comprised of two new buildings including a new teaching block and a leisure centre including a swimming pool and sports hall. The external space was rationalised with improved play areas and new landscaping.

The school had to remain open during construction, so temporary buildings were provided to facilitate this and a carefully planned phased programme was implemented to consider the needs of the school.

OCC were contracted to deliver the groundworks package, from the very early stages constructing the foundations to the very end where we shaped the school grounds and connected up the new buildings with footpaths, roads and car parks. Our works included:

• Pile caps and ground beams with holding down bolts for the steel frame
• Precast edge beams
• Ground floor slab
• Swimming pool concrete structure
• Drainage including an attenuation tank
• External works including paving, tarmac, kerbs and edgings, step

We also returned towards the end of the project to carry out the substantial external works, linking the new buildings together and bringing the school grounds to life.
